Teachers' Day:
Celebrating the origin of Education
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
-Nelson Mandela

Education is the building block of a civilized society. Education empowers a community. It plays an essential role in development of individual as well as society. Without education our world would not have been in this place as we are today. We can gain knowledge and education from everywhere around us but as we are a part of a systematic society we have schools and colleges to give us the proper education that we need to grow as responsible adults from infants. Mainly we called them as teachers who teach us in schools, colleges but teachers can be anyone who teach us anything at any point of our life.
Our first teachers are our parents. They teach us how to talk, walk, write, eat basically all the basic things of life. Then comes those people whom we meet in schools and colleges who teach us all the book-learning and many more things to become a successful person.
Hence, teachers are unarguably very important members of our society. To celebrate their contributions towards us we celebrate 5th September of every year as Teachers’ Day in India. It is celebrated every year on second president of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Ramakrishna's birthday since 1962 to honor his belief that “teachers should be the best minds in the country”.
Teachers’ Day also celebrated in other countries on different dates. Such as in Argentina on 11th September, Brazil on 15th October, Egypt on 28th February, Hong Kong on 10th September etc to name a few. Many countries celebrate 5th October as their Teachers’ Day which is World Teachers’ Day established by UNESCO.
Teachers’ Day mainly celebrated in educational institutions where students show their love and respect towards teachers on that very day through different performances. In my school, senior girls and boys used to dress up in saris and formals respectively like teachers and take classes of junior students. So that teachers can take rest on that day. We used to have half days on that day and after that a small function used to happen where students from various classes perform for teachers.
Students also give teachers some gifts. I remember giving my favourite teachers some small gifts like pens or cards. When we are in school premises, teachers become our parents-like. They scold us, teach us, guide us and most importantly love us. A society without teachers is incomplete. Hence, to show our love and gratitude towards them, it is necessary to keep a day just for them for their offerings towards the society.
